چکیده

We present the results from our deep optical imaging survey µ V lim ≈ 26 − 27 mag/ 2 ′′ of a morphologically selected sample of 72 edge-on disk galaxies. The question of the global structure of galactic stellar disks, especially the radial surface brightness profile at large galactocen-tric distances, is addressed. We find that typical radial profiles are better described by a two-slope exponential profile —characterised by an inner and outer scalelength separated at a break radius— rather than a sharply-truncated exponential model. Results are given for three face-on equivalents, serving as the crucial test to assure the findings for the edge-on sample without possible geometrical line-of-sight effects.

The effect of variation of stellar dispersion velocities by the galactic latitude in interpreting gravitational microlensing observations

Our galaxy is a spiral galaxy and its stars are mostly in a thin disk and rotate around the galactic center. The vertical component of the dispersion velocity of stars is a function of the galactic latitude and decreases with increasing it. In the galactic Besancon model, this dependence is ignored and they just consider the dependence of dispersion velocity on the stellar age. Becanson model i...

On the Formation of Extended Galactic Disks by Tidally Disrupted Dwarf Galaxies

We explore the possibility that extended disks, such as that recently discovered in M31, are the result of a single dwarf (10–10M⊙) satellite merger. We conduct N-body simulations of dwarf NFW halos with embedded spheriodal stellar components on co-planar, prograde orbits in a M31-like host galaxy. As the orbit decays due to dynamical friction and the system is disrupted, the stellar particles ...

Stellar abundance gradients in galactic disks. I. Method and spectral line gradients

We describe the technique of absorption line imaging of galaxy disks using the Taurus Tunable Filter on the Anglo-Australian Telescope and demonstrate its sensitivity to the behaviour of spectral features associated with Mg and Fe. Radial profiles of Mg2 and Fe5270 line-strengths are presented for a sample of eight face-on spiral galaxies spanning a range of Hubble types. Signatures of phenomen...

Application of the global modal approach to spiral galaxies

We have tested the applicability of the global modal approach in the density wave theory of spiral structure for a sample of six spiral galaxies: NGC 488, NGC 628, NGC 1566, NGC 2985, NGC 3938 and NGC 6503. The galaxies demonstrate a variety of spiral patterns from the regular open and tightly wound spiral patterns to a multi-armed spiral structure. Using the observed radial distributions of th...

Application of the global modal approach to the spiral galaxies

We have tested the applicability of the global modal approach in the density wave theory of spiral structure for a sample of spiral galaxies with measured axisymmetric background properties. We report here the results of the simulations for four galaxies: NGC 488, NGC 628, NGC 1566, and NGC 3938. Using the observed radial distributions for the stellar velocity dispersions and the rotation veloc...
